Commissions

Commission me to do a custom painting

You can commission me to do a painting. Do you have a photograph from a favorite place? A favorite pet? A sentimental object? I can work with you to create a special piece of artwork for your home, or as a gift to someone special. If you have a wall in your home that needs something new and fresh, I can create a piece to meet those needs. I make it easy for you!

Terri Schmitt oil painting of sunflowers triptych
This oil painting is 24 inches high and 90 inches wide. I painted it on 3 canvas panels that fit my client’s wall perfectly.

Choices for commissioned paintings

Watercolor paintings on paper have a soft appearance because the white of the paper reflects light through the transparent colors of watercolor paints. Most watercolor paintings are matted and framed under glass. Oil paintings are usually created on stretched canvas or wood panels. The paint is opaque and canvas texture is apparent underneath. Oil paintings do not require matting and glass, but are often framed.

Commissioned paintings, the process is easy!

Working with me is easy. I’ve done this a lot! I have a system that works well and helps me to do a painting for you that you will be thrilled with.

  1. You choose the size of the painting that suits your needs and budget.
  2. You contact me and we start a conversation via phone or email.
  3. We find or take a photograph that shows your subject in its best light.
  4. You pay me half of the fee upfront.
  5. I send you a pencil sketch and a color study.
  6. You approve the sketch and a color option.
  7. I create your custom watercolor painting.
  8. I mount your new painting into an acid-free mat that is ready for framing.
  9. You pay me the balance in full.
  10. I deliver your painting to you.

How fast can I get my commissioned painting?

Depending on the circumstances, a commission can take as few as two weeks to create. Before I begin, we set expectations by agreeing to a date for completion. Please allow time for shipping to your location.

What you can expect along the way?

I enjoy documenting the process of making your painting. I always like to send you photos of my progress along the way. Sometimes I will do time-lapse video of the painting process. I always want to respect the privacy of my clients and will not share details on social media until you have received your finished painting.

You receive a quality product

When you commission me to do a painting; I use quality materials. For example, for a watercolor: I use 300 lb, cotton watercolor paper that allows me a lot of creative freedom during the painting process, and results in a very sturdy product. My paints are professional-grade. If your piece requires matting, I cut the custom mat from acid-free, conservation-quality materials. These choices allow me to deliver the best quality product to you, one that will last the test of time.

My prices for a commissioned painting

My prices for the finished, matted watercolors are as follows. Oil paintings are priced similarly, but I prefer to do custom quotes for them.

Custom framing is available for commissioned paintings

Framing is an important step that reflects a person’s individual tastes. If you wish to frame the work yourself, I have made it easy. Most of the sizes above are standard, and lovely frames are available locally. In the event that you do not have access to framing, I can easily provide that service. My vendors provide a wide assortment of high-quality, wood frames and non-glare glass to protect your artwork. Just let me know if this is something you wish to have, and I can quote a price.
